Genesis: A World Created Intentionally, Not Randomly

Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

The very beginning of the book of Genesis is the most awe-inspiring portion of the Bible for me. My imagination runs wild trying to picture what God did to create the world. Genesis 1:2 states, “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” And verses 3-4 continue, “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from darkness.” Just reading these lines alone, I thought I was being let in on highly classified information, it felt illegal!

My eyes were opened for the very first time.

The Meaning

God is omnipotent, omniscient, all-loving, and eternal. His motivation to create the world and us came from a place of true love. As one reads on through Genesis, there is an explanation of how Jesus creates:

·         light and dark

·         the atmosphere and firmament

·         land and water

·         the sun, moon, and stars

·         seed-bearing plants and trees

·         animals on land and in the sea

·         human beings

·         the sabbath

The creation of the world was not randomly formed; rather, it was done purposefully, masterfully, and in an order. We can observe how God’s natural order is necessary and how it manifests in every aspect of our lives and the world around us. For example, the creation of day and night. God created our bodies to need the day and night in different ways, working in the day and resting in the evening. He had specific intention in creating the days, years, seasons –His intention was to make life for humans predictable and measurable.

It can also be seen that He is not just a creator, but an organizer. Genesis provides clear instruction that there is hierarchy in how He has designed and placed every single detail.

It is important to note that after each set of creation, God seems to take in and observe it. Scripture says repeatedly in Genesis, “and it was good” or “and it was so”. These short phrases give peace to the reader as it shows God was righteous and knowing in His decisions. No mistakes were made.

My Thoughts

In learning about creation, it reminds me of how important it is to have routine and order in my own life. When we stray from our natural design or God’s plan for our lives – chaos is sure to ensue.
