John 3:16: The Most Popular Bible Verse Of All Time

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The Meaning

This verse is a good synopsis of the gospels in its entirety - that God sent Jesus to the world to die for us and so that anyone who may trust in Him shall be given everlasting life.

Seemingly simple, however, there are always deeper thoughts and meanings to every single verse in the Bible.

In shortness, God hates sin and the evil it has dispersed across this world. Over the thousands of years since the world’s inception, humans have managed to tarnish and destroy it with our sinful nature. We therefore became truly unworthy of God and all He had created for us. Because God is righteous, and the wages of sin is death, this meant that any sinner who died would face eternal separation from God.

Just those words alone send shivers down my spine and a fear in my spirit.

Thankfully, to reverse this death sentence, God sent Jesus (the perfect sinless man) to earth to die and face brutal torture so that we sinners shall not perish and be separated from God but forgiven and given the beautiful gift of eternal life!

My Thoughts

Think of Jesus as an intermediary, a bridge, that keeps us linked to our Father in heaven. I always think to myself: imagine creating living, breathing, beautiful creatures that harness a supernatural spirit and live in a wonderfully complex consciousness (the most masterful creation that we can’t even fathom) and then that very creature turns on you and denies you.

Imagine God’s true anguish and hurt over His creation who have turned on Him or those who have sinned against Him and not repented. It is truly with such grace and love that He has chosen to forgive us for being the sinners we are.

This is why we should thank Him in our prayers daily: ‘Thank you Father for forgiving our sins and gracing us with eternal life by your side. This world you have created and the living beings in it is a beautiful, wonderful place and I thank you graciously for allowing me to live in it. In Jesus name, Amen.”
