Is It Okay To Swear As A Christian?
James 3: 11-12: “Can both fresh water and saltwater flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?”
Personally, my swearing has been a difficult roadblock to overcome since becoming saved.
There are days when my tongue is tamed, and I’ve managed to listen more than speak. Then there are days when my patience is low, and it seems I have little control over what comes out of my mouth.
James says in chapter 3, how is it we can praise the Lord and Father and then in the next breath we are cursing our fellow humans? He says, my brothers and sisters, this should not be. If we know one thing, it’s that Jesus spoke with gentleness, kindness, and most importantly, with life.
We know that in this chapter James was referring to cursing as in speaking ill of our fellow brothers and sisters. However, there isn’t much reference in the Bible to using those common curse words we see today (your f-bombs and the s word for example).
As a Christian, if you are unleashing every cuss word you can, it can prove that you have a lack of self-control. We are representatives of Christ; we are to demonstrate Him in the best way that we can. Using vulgarity out of a body where the Holy Spirit dwells, shows extreme contradiction.
In Matthew 6:22-23, Jesus says: The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
This verse relates to this topic because it talks about how information going in will affect what is coming out. Jesus tells us that what we see, hear, and fill our hearts with matters. This can relate to the unbeliever. The unbeliever knows that positivity is a mindset; and that you become who you hang around.
Watching movies, TV shows, and being around those who curse or even worse, take the Lord’s name in vain can and will rub off on you. Nowadays, it is hard to avoid cussing. It surely has become customary in society.
On the topic of taking the Lord’s name in vain, ask yourself,
· How many times have you cursed the Lord’s name?
· Have you ever wondered why using the Lord’s name has become a curse word in itself?
It is commonplace now in the world to be upset, shocked, or angry and say Jesus’ full name. Of what dishonor did He deserve this? It is shameful. If you think right now about it, there are many different variations of curse-words that involve saying God, Jesus, Mary, and many other spiritual references.
Hmm, I wonder who thought of all these curse-words?
Our mouths as Christians should be monitored. We have His name to uphold. Try to speak love, life, and with honor for Him.
